OBJECTIVES
This workshop will consist of expressive abstract drawing, painting, composition, and vibrant colour mixing exercises, culminating in a primary abstract painting project. Participants will:

  1. Practice expressive drawing and painting techniques to loosen their creative flow
  2. Explore abstract compositions
  3. Experiment with vibrant colour combinations
  4. Develop a personalized expressive warm-up program
  5. Integrate multiple abstract expressive techniques
  6. Apply layers in abstract painting
  7. Produce an original abstract expressionist painting

Day 1: Exploration, experimentation, and new skills

I’ll guide you through energetic drawing and painting activities intended to loosen your hold on expected artistic outcomes. Drawing on these exercises, you’ll create your own expressive warm-up plan to kickstart your day 2. We will also collectively explore abstract compositions and experiment with fun and outrageous colour combinations. The schedule allows time to practice and explore using multiple expressive techniques together.

Day 2: Painting your own abstract expressionist masterpiece

Day 2 begins with your personalized expressive warm-up plan. I’ll guide you through the steps, techniques, options, and layers of creating an abstract expressionist painting with mark-making. The process allows plenty of room for your own creative expression while offering enough guidance for those who may still be hesitant to trust their expressive instincts.

Artist Biography
BStewartBeth W. Stewart is an abstract expressionist and self-described “abstract artivist” who creates vibrant, complex acrylic paintings inspired by social justice. She began painting expressively in the midst of conducting research in post-conflict northern Uganda, grounding her creative practice in an ethic of bearing witness. Now, as an educator of history and social justice, Beth draws inspiration from historical and contemporary stories of resistance, resilience, and revolution. As the incoming North Vancouver Recreation and Culture Artist in Residence (October–February), Beth is focused on developing her practice of abstract artivism and sharing her creative methodology with artists and activists of all ages through art workshops that inspire social change. Her paintings have been featured internationally in exhibitions, galleries, academic journals, conferences, and on book covers. They can be found in private collections throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Beth lives in Vancouver with her three children and canine studio assistant named Bear.
