Course Description
Light is fundamental to how we see. The moment you raise your paintbrush to the two- dimensional surface of the canvas, you use of light and shadow to define the image you create. Regardless of how one works, from high realism to wild abstraction, light and shadow are crucial to creating an illusion of 3-dimensionality on a 2-dimensional surface In this workshop we will be examining the actions of light that are essential to visual perception, and how to maximize those actions to create whatever you want to express. The workshop will begin with an introduction into the role of light in creating form, and how we incorporate these actions to perceive the visual world around us. From this new appreciation of light and shadow as the determinant of form, we will create a set of basic geometric shapes. Participants will be asked to complete any unfinished drawings over the intervening week as well as taking a directed series of digital photographs. These finished exercises and the series of photographs will be discussed in detail the following Saturday. From discussions as a group and by learning from each other’s observations, the actions of light in the creation form will be more fully absorbed into your artistic practice, as well as how you see the world around us.

David Aldrich has spent his life involved with the visual arts. A native of West Vancouver, his first degree was in Oriental Art History from the University of British Columbia. Afterwards, He moved to Toronto and enrolled in a two-year program at the New School of Art and spent 5 years developing a visual art practice focused on the male nude. In his early 30’s, David enrolled in Art As Applied to Medicine at the University of Toronto and spent much of his career as a medical illustrator. Later he became fully engaged in academia with a faculty position at the Cleveland Institute of Art, and then finished his career in administrative roles, culminating at the Alberta College of Art and Design as Vice President Academic Affairs. In retirement, David returned to painting as a portraitist. Currently he is working on “A Portrait of Rio Lagartos”. His goal is to capture the essence of this small fishing village on the north coast of the Yucatan peninsula through a series of 10 to 12 paintings, each focused on individuals who are emblematic of the diversity and commonalties of this community, and through them a glimpse of the underlying universality of human experience that we all share.
