Course Description

Have you always wanted to paint figures but felt intimidated? I will show you my step-by-step process, and you will learn the essentials of creating intuitive figures. Starting by creating a "playground" on the substrate we will look for figures and stories to bring forward.

You will learn how to:

  • respond intuitively to what's on the canvas
    • use a tablet and photo app to test your ideas
  • create striking figure paintings using a reductive technique
  • pick a palette
    • incorporate collage & mixed media successfully in your paintings
  • Use your imagination and internal reference library
    • critique & correct your own work

Principles and elements of design and colour theory will be integrated.

During the workshop you will learn through the instructor’s demo, individual guidance, and group feedback sessions.

Artist Biography

SpacerPatt Scrivener was born in Nipawin, Saskatchewan and grew up on a grain farm along with her four siblings. Although there was always lots of work to do, there was time to create, too. Patt’s first childhood memory of art was colouring on any paper that was around and although she does not remember she has been told she coloured on walls too! Patt works in many mediums including acrylic, encaustic and cold wax with oil. Her work includes imagery of people, landscape and abstraction. The layering of a variety of media offers an assortment of possibilities within her work. “My work is about the process – I love layering, scraping, sanding, pouring and dripping. I use many unorthodox tools and love going to the hardware store!"

In 2007 Patt studied life coaching and this was instrumental in her decision to becoming a full time artist and to help others develop their creativity. Patt devotes her time creating original works and teaching others. She facilitates workshops and a mentorship program in her Parksville Studio. Patt is a Signature (AFCA) member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and a member of the DeCosmos Fine Arts Society.
