    Bio for Kathy Swift

     KATHY SWIFT, WATERMEDIA ARTIST

                   Kathy has been studying and practicing painting with water-based mediums since 1988. She has been involved in organizing and participating in numerous workshops with various B.C. and American Artists during this time, and continues to enjoy trying new techniques and ideas to expand her own working style.

     Kathy studied Fine Arts, with her focus on Printmaking and Sculpture. Her love of painting and art making have led her into teaching assignments throughout the Lower Mainland.

     Kathy was a director with the South Delta Artists' Guild, with roles as president and vice president.

     Becoming an Active Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists in 1991, Kathy has exhibited in numerous juried shows in their gallery, taking on the position of Secretary in 1993, and continuing to sit on the Board as a Member at Large until 1996.  Kathy sat as the Executive Assistant on the very successful "AIM FOR ARTS International Exhibition" committee.

     Her journey continued with her position working for International Artist Magazine, as the Editorial Assistant to the International Editor, the UK Editor and the Canadian Editor.

 This Workshop's Goals for You

Exploring Working in Layers in Abstraction

Have you ever just wanted to start by playing, and then build upon each layer, adding composition, colour, marks, and working toward a completed painting?
This workshop is all about that process.  Following your own path - mark making, working in transparent and semi-transparent layers, and composing a piece bit by bit.  This way of learning can then be taken back into painting more realistic images, using layers and layers for a rich visual experience.
Or you can move forward in an abstract fashion, which we will pursue in these two days, and feel happy with a final composition that works.
The focus will be on creating a strong composition, with many layers.  We will work on 3 pieces all at the same time - “a mini-series” and each painting will help to inform the next.  The paintings will be small in size - you can work 10 X 10 or 12 X 12 in Acrylic, with mixed media.  A supply list will be provided.  Work will be on wood cradled panels.

Supplies you need to bring

  * Palette – keep it simple – a butcher tray, or a 12 X 16 cafeteria tray, a roll of blue shop paper towels, and tracing paper to fit the palette 11 X 14 size works.

* 1 – 2 water buckets

* Some sandpaper 80, 100, 120 grit (not much is needed)

* Blow Dryer or craft heat gun (I use a craft heat gun)

* 12” paint shield from your local paint store

* Gesso

* Tubes of acrylic paint, or squeeze bottles, or both – whatever you prefer is fine. Make sure you have lots of WHITE and BLACK acrylic paint, and preferably some quinacridone nickel azo gold.

I also use white house paint so if you have some, bring it and a squeeze bottle or two.

* Gloss Medium

* Pouring Medium – I use Liquitex for this, but there are other brands that will work.

* You will need 3 (TOTAL) 12” x 12” or 10” X 10” Cradled Wood Panels for this course.

Note: Please gesso all your panels white on one side before you arrive.

* Flat and round paint brushes, various sizes.

* Oil Pastels

* Pencils – all different types

* A Straight Edge (ruler)

* You can bring some collage papers if you like

* Scraping and mark making tools

* Rags

* An apron (if you are messy like me)

* Your imagination

* Lunch: We will take a 45 minute lunch break so people should plan to bring their own or head up the street to Macdonald’s.  Coffee will be available in the studio.

Registration: To sign up for this workshop directly, please scroll down to the bottom of this page. Enrollment and waitlist status is also presented there. You can pay directly on-line by credit card. You will need to make payment within 24 hours of your enrollment or it will be automatically cancelled so if you need assistance in paying, please contact Stephen Cowell, cowell.stephen@gmail.com  [Payment by cheque is discouraged as this is unreliable when time is of the essence.]

This course may fill up quickly.  Do not hesitate to join the WAIT LIST. If it is full, do not be discouraged. Check back later- you may still be able to get in.

For every workshop we have run this year, we have had cancellations because of illness or change of plans.  Often even a wait list of eight names or more is moved up because "life changes things."  However, if you are on the wait list and change your own plans, please do not hold your space in the queue. Please take your name off the wait list and let someone else have a chance.   Be kind to your colleagues and remove your name if you have a change of plans.

Cancellations: If you are unable to attend a workshop, refunds are not issued, but you may find another person to take your place.  Only if the workshop is full and there is a willing replacement on the Waitlist,  can you cancel through Stephen Cowell, in which case a refund will be issued.   No Refunds will be issued within 48 hours of the workshop start time.

NSAG reserves the right to cancel the course within 30 days.
