Gaye Adams Storm approaching

This workshop will focus on painting the effects of light.  Light dances, bounces, illuminates, shimmers and reflects.  It is juicy stuff for painters to sink their teeth into, and in painting, it is all, of course, illusion.  It is a brilliant illusion achieved by the accurate juxtaposition of values, colours and edges.

Skill building will be around seeing tonal value very accurately, and translating it into the correct colour and temperature relationships. Students will be working from photo references.  Day One, I will provide a reference for students to work from if they wish.  Day two, students should bring their own photo reference to work from.

Both days will start with a brief talk and demo; then, students will work on their own projects with personalized one on one coaching.

I wil be working with oils during this workshop, but acrylic painters will also benefit. Please come prepared with photos that are of sufficient quality for this exercise.  Bring photos that are not flashed or over or under exposed  Printing images out on inexpensive printer is also NOT advised as tonal values and colour accuracy are often compromised.

I am blessed to live the life of a painter.  My work is not at all difficult to understand.  It is merely an ongoing exploration of that which I find beautiful, from the everyday to the extraordinary.  What really drives me to the easel is my love of rendering light.  Backlight, cast shadows, bounced light - it is all mesmerizing.  I enjoy the other elements present in the visual field, those of colour and design, etc., but the light hooks me every time.

In addition to doing my larger studio paintings, I very much enjoy painting on site, and have been privileged to do a fair amount of traveling and painting in the last number of years.  I also enjoy doing small studies of still life and the model in my studio during our long Canadian winters.

To balance the solitude of my life as a painter, I find a great deal of fulfillment paying forward the skills my mentors have passed on to me to my students.  What a joy!  I have met some really amazing folk through the years.

I recommend Gamblin or M. Graham paints.  Opus carries a good selection of Gamblin.  In addition, please bring the following:

Viewfinder.  If you cannot find one, bring a neutral gray 3 x 3 piece of mat board with a pencil size hole in the center

Gamsol odorless mineral spirits (for brush cleaning) and a container with a lid to pour it into.  Do NOT bring inexpensive solvent as it bothers others, especially those with breathing issues.

Blue shop towels (Walmart automotive section)

Baby Wipes for Clean up

painting gloves

Walnut oil, alkyd or regular.  Alkyd dries faster.

Brushes - bring good brushes that keep their shape in a variety of sizes and types.  I use a wide range and it is better to have a few good brushes than many poor ones.  I use primarily flats, finding them quite versatile.

Palette, glass or disposable, not too small.  You need adequate space for mixing. 11 x 14 is a good size.

FOUR 8 x 10 well gessoed canvases or panels.

Easels are available.

You will need to make payment within 24 hours of your enrollment or it will be automatically cancelled so if you need assistance in paying, please contact Richard Prutton by email: raprutton@gmail.com . • There is a coffee shop in the Community Centre and a cafeteria for lunches in the Senior's Center. There is 3 hour parking at the Centre and plenty of street parking. If you have mobility issues, you may obtain a day parking pass from the reception desk in the Senior's Center. (a deposit will be collected and refunded when the pass is returned)

This course may fill up quickly.  Do not hesitate to join the WAIT LIST. If it is full, do not be discouraged. Check back later- you may still be able to get in.

For every workshop we have run this year, we have had cancellations because of illness or change of plans.  Often even a wait list of eight names or more is moved up because "life changes things."  However, if you are on the wait list and change your own plans, please do not hold your space in the queue. Please take your name off the wait list and let someone else have a chance.   Be kind to your colleagues and remove your name if you have a change of plans.

Cancellations. If you are unable to attend a workshop, refunds are not issued, but you may find another person to take your place. Only if the workshop is full can you cancel through Richard Prutton, in which case a refund will be issued if your spot can be filled from the waitlist.

NSAG reserves the right to cancel the course within 30 days.
