Larry Mitchell: About the Artist
Born and raised in Vancouver, Canada and living in the Edgemont Village area of North Vancouver. Larry is a visual artist working with drawing, painting, print-making and mixed media. His style ranges widely between abstract expressionism and realism. Inspiration comes from the natural and man-made worlds. Many artists have influenced his work – notably Jack Shadbolt, Tony Onley, Gordon Smith, Zao Wou-Ki, Mark Rothko, and Jean-Paul Riopelle.
Larry's images draw on an interest in west coast landscape and architecture. He is influenced by the spectacular beauty of our natural and man-made surroundings which he photographs, draws and paints. Collections of photographs, clippings, drawings and collages are starting points of his work. Images are reworked a number of times before attempts are made on finished pieces. He is not interested in reality as such, but rather abstract extensions of reality; he tries to simplify images and draw the viewer in.
Larry obtained a Bachelor of Education degree from Simon Fraser University and continued his studies in Art Education at the University of British Columbia. He taught for in the British Columbia school system for 35 years working as an Art teacher, classroom instructor, teacher librarian, completed a Fine Arts programme at Emily Carr University and plans to continue studies there. Larry recently joined the North Shore Artist Guild. His images are found in private collections.
