David McEown: MOUNTAINS IN WATERCOLOUR
Coming to us May 19-20, the amazing watercolour artist David McEown. Some of David’s beautiful paintings from earlier trips to both Arctic and Antartica will be featured below. For our workshop, David is going to focus on our own West Coast Mountains.
Canadian artist, David McEown, has used watercolour for the past 25 years to explore and express many of this earth's disappearing wilderness areas. His paintings from Antarctica to the North Pole are represented in collections worldwide.
David is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design and is an elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, which in 2005 awarded him the society's prestigious A. J. Casson Medal. To view his paintings and journeys visit his website:
We will explore essential watercolour techniques and perception exercises to paint directly from nature. We will also learn to interpret and transcend the photo reference during studio exercises.
Day One will begin with warmups of essential wet into wet, control the bead, gravity, value and colour exercises. We will do 15 minute mountain paintings using all the toys and tools!
In the demo, David will bring all the elements together in an organic whole and luminous transparent depth of field. There will be an Under Painting lesson to set up a glow via complementary washes.
On Day Two, Hard and soft edges, illusion of space, working from background to foreground, mastering the art of negative shapes (without masking fluids!) and establishing a hierarchy of focal point, using composition to tell the story.
Supplies You Need to Bring
