Making Acrylics Pop Perry Haddock, SFCA
The primary goal of the workshop is to encourage participants to approach landscape painting with an experimental attitude and the idea that, “It’s only ten bucks worth of materials. Have some fun.” That isn’t to say that painting doesn’t require some knowledge of the principles of design and some discipline to apply them. However, sometimes the anxiety of thinking we have to produce a “finished product” often results in tight drawing, tight brushwork, and slavish attention to photo sources. Instead, let’s aim to challenge ourselves to “loosen up.” Along the way, we’ll talk about composition, values, and colour as they apply to our paintings.
Participants are encouraged to bring several landscape photos as references. The majority of the time will be spent painting, so make sure you have enough photos, canvasses, and snacks!
Artist’s Statement
For me, art is simply a way of expressing mood. Whether I paint or sing or play a tuba, I’m expressing my personal reaction to my world at a given moment, so I want my paintings to reveal something of my emotion and my personality to those who see them. I choose watercolour and acrylic as the “freshest” of mediums, and I enjoy the interplay of purpose and accident which the quick drying watermedia allow me to explore. Although my subjects range from Italian coastal bays and Parisian markets to western Canadian landscapes, I’m always searching for the simplest expression of the moment, the image which evokes an impression rather than a detailed rendering. Perhaps that’s why I enjoy painting “en plein air” or doing pen and ink sketches on site as sources for paintings which I later develop in my studio. Unlike photos, my sketches become my “edited reality” during the few minutes I have to do them.
British Columbia’s west coast has been my home for most of my life, so I am most comfortable painting the landforms and coastal waters near my home. Travels around Canada and Europe give me a taste for trying new compositions and palettes, and keep me challenged and energized.
Supply List :
Bring whatever acrylic paints and supplies you have: along with your paints and brushes*, palette, paper towels, crackers and cheese, etc., and at least two smallish (11x14, 12x16, 14x18, ) canvasses primed with a couple of coats of gesso. (Opus canvasses are already primed with two coats. Other brands probably are too, but not the cheap “dollar store” canvasses. Avoid them Bring a few reference photos if you want, but I’ll also bring multiple copies of some of mine, in case you want to “paint along with Perry”.
*Along with your other brushes, try to find a wide flat brush—at least an inch, and wider (up to 2”) if possible. Opus used to sell a “gesso brush” which I use, but haven’t been able to find any recently.
I use mostly Stevenson Brand acrylics, but any brand of professional, or “artist” quality will do. Don't feel you need all of these, but...
My most common tubes are:
Titanium white
Green gold (Stevenson is more transparent, so I use it.)
Indian yellow
Yellow ochre
Cadmium yellow light
Cad yellow medium
Pthalo blue (red shade)
Cerulean blue
Pthalo Turquoise
Dioxazine purple
Transparent red iron oxide
Quinacridone burnt orange (Golden brand) Optional (expensive!)
Quinacridone nickel azo gold Optional “
Quinacridone magenta Optional “
Hookers green

and
A small container of black gesso, any brand. (share with someone? You don’t need much.)

Be kind to your colleagues and remove your name if you have a change of plans.
Cancellations. If you are unable to attend a workshop, refunds are not issued, but you may find another person to take your place. Only if the workshop is full can you cancel through Richard Prutton, in which case a refund will be issued if your spot can be filled from the waitlist.
